IGNOU Online MBA: Duration, Structure and Specialisations
IGNOU Online MBA program is provided by IGNOU’s School of Management Studies (SOMS) and similar to other IGNOU MBA programs, the online MBA program is also approved by AICTE.
This is a 2 year program with specializations in fields to choose from as per one’s interest, but the specialisation options are limited to the main management areas, not dozens of niche titles. As per the latest official MBA Online Student Handbook:
- Minimum duration is 2 years and maximum duration is 4 years
- The programme consists of 28 courses and 116 credits in total
- 20 core courses (MMPC-001 to MMPC-020)
- 7 courses from one specialisation area
- 1 project course (MMPP-001) which is equal to 2 courses in weightage
Each IGNOU MBA student is allowed to choose 7 courses from a specialised field, such as Human Resource Management, Financial Management, Operations Management, Marketing Management or Services Management.
To obtain an IGNOU MBA degree with a specialization, one must complete 7 specialization courses from his or her chosen specialization area along with 20 core courses and the project. The specialization courses are chosen in the third and fourth semesters of the program, four in the third semester and three in the final semester. The project course is equivalent to 2 courses.
So the specialisation logic from your old article is still correct, only the long list of 25–30 specialisations needs to be removed and replaced with the official five areas:

How IGNOU Online MBA Is Delivered: Classes and LMS

Because of this structure, you get a good base in all key management subjects in the first year and then you go deeper in one chosen area in second year.
IGNOU Online MBA Eligibility Criteria
For Indian students
- Any graduate in any discipline with a Bachelor degree of minimum three years from a recognised university.
- You should have 50 percent marks in graduation if you are from general category. However, if you belong to the reserved category, then you need to have 45 percent marks for graduation, as per Government of India rules.
- Student should ensure that his or her CGPA should meet the eligibility percentage requirement.
- There is no age bar for admission and no entrance exam (OPENMAT is not required now for MBAOL).
So in simple words, if you are a graduate with required percentage and your university is recognised, you are eligible to apply for IGNOU Online MBA.
Eligibility for Foreign Students
- Student must have a valid student visa for the duration of the course.
- Must have a clearance from the Ministry of External Affairs or Ministry of Education (earlier HRD). This procedure is carried out by the International Division of IGNOU.
- They must also meet the same academic eligibility as Indian students, that is a recognised bachelor degree and required percentage.
- Fee for international students is different and is handled through special portals like FSRI and Overseas Student portals.

IGNOU Online MBA Fee Structure
The fee structure for IGNOU Online MBA program is as follows:
- Rs. 16,000 per semester for 1st, 2nd and 4th semester
- Rs. 18,000 for 3rd semester (because 3rd semester has 8–credit project course)

The total fee for IGNOU Online MBA is around Rs. 66,000/- for the 2 year program, only programme fee, excluding registration fee, development fee and exam fee. Students can pay the fee in instalments semester wise.

IGNOU Online MBA: Admission Process
The admission process for IGNOU Online MBA is 100% online. Below is the simple step-by-step process to apply:
- Visit the Online Programmes portal
- Go to ignouiop.samarth.edu.in or the link given on IGNOU website for MBAOL.
- Register yourself (New user registration)
- Click on New Registration
- Enter your name, mobile number, email ID, create password
- Verify your email and mobile
- Fill the Online Application Form
- Login with your username and password
- Select Master of Business Administration (Online): MBAOL
- Fill personal details, address, category, work experience (if any)
- Fill educational details for 10th, 12th and graduation
- Upload all necessary documents (scanned copies)

So practically, you do not need to visit any regional centre for admission to IGNOU Online MBA. Everything, from registration to fee payment, happens through the online portal only.
Documents Required for IGNOU Online MBA Admission
Below are the documents that students usually need to upload while filling the IGNOU Online MBA form:

IGNOU Online MBA: Modular Approach and Exit Options
IGNOU follows a modular approach to its program offerings, which means many management programmes are designed in such a way that learners can use the same courses for MBA and related PG Diplomas, or can move from diploma to degree.

IGNOU Online MBA: Exams, Assignments and Evaluation
IGNOU Online MBA follows the same basic evaluation system as other IGNOU postgraduate programmes. It is a mix of continuous assessment and term-end examinations.
1. Assignments
- Every course in MBAOL has a Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA)
- You need to download the latest assignment question booklet from IGNOU website or LMS
- Assignments must be submitted before the last date announced for that semester
- Marks of assignments carry a fixed weightage in the final result and are compulsory for appearing in term-end exams
2. Term-End Examinations (TEE)
- IGNOU conducts term-end exams twice in a year, normally in June and December

Question 1: Do students for the Online MBA program at IGNOU need to go through an entrance examination?

For the online mode of the MBA programme, a student needs to clear the graduation degree with required percentage and there is no entrance examination for IGNOU Online MBA. Earlier IGNOU used OPENMAT for MBA admission, but for the new MBA and MBAOL this entrance test has been removed.
